Five Poker Resolutions

Each year end finds me greeting it with relief that I can meet a bad streak with a fresh beginning or relish an opportunity to build on a locked-up winning run. Each requires renewed focus on fundamentals to regain or retain focus. What follows are 5 tactics for accomplishing just that.

1. Plan. Know what you want to improve, what methods you will use to improve, and how you will assess how well you have improved. The more specific the issue you want to work on the easier it will be to measure. Some examples include how much to buy-in for at a low-stakes no-limit hold'em cash game, how much are you leaking to see a flop at the limit Omaha 8 or better game, optimum bet strategy with a big pair in the blinds of a no-limit hold'em cash game with 3 limpers, and cost savings strategies for your next week-long Las Vegas poker playing trip.

2. Study. Continue to work on aspects of your game, especially in preparation for what you expect to play, and do it smartly. I review magazine articles, forum posts, and other resources to identify who are regarded as people to listen to depending on what I am concentrating on. Once identified I hunt for podcasts, instructional or interview videos, books, articles, and other material to study. Little things are what give people an edge. Discuss your game with people who are as good as if not better than you are. Pay attention to what strong players say that doesn't show up in many places, take notes, and even distill everything down into a white paper for later review if you can.

3. Rest. Among the most crucial needs for playing your best is to play when rested. A personal for instance relates to when I travel to play. The first thing I did on my most recent poker playing trips to Cripple Creek, Tunica, and Las Vegas was to rest. Occasionally I walk a bit as well, but in each instance I took a nap before finding my way to a poker room to play. Especially when I travel to Vegas, I commonly do not play at all the first day of my trip.

4. Eat well. This includes eating healthily. Know where you expect to be playing and prepare nutritionally. Your on-site choices for food in some places may only be between a snack bar and a buffet. Dietarily neither may be viable options, especially if you only want something small or light. Bring a backpack with water and snacks to stave off hunger and help you eat better. You will also avoid a heavy meal that can make you drowsy.

5. Avoid alcohol. Not only is this important to help you play sharply but it is also useful to keep in mind for game selection. I almost never drink when I play, but I look for a game where some people are. I may have a drink or two on vacation playing a $2-4 limit hold'em but I also have found that the largest relative profit I have had in many games are low stakes limit hold'em games.

These tips are probably not revelations to many of you but hopefully they can serve as reminders to continually to work to remain sharp and improve.

Robert is also the Host of a brand new show right here at OnTilt Radio... "Taking It Down". Join Robert and Ted Leahy every Monday following Poker Advocacy.

Beating The Crud!

Hello and Welcome to my corner of the Post. My name is Pamela, I am a wife & a mother, The Co-Founder of OnTilt Radio, Coffee lover, an incurable decorator, baker, gardener, tipster, crafter, and lover of many things … who adores the past, cherishes the present and delights in daydreaming of what I can find to repurpose especially from my Craigslist finds… Today I share with you my home cooked remidies for the coming cold and flu season. This year's crop of viruses are predicted to be one of the worst in recent years. I love to hear from my readers and share their ideas with me. I will share some right here in Contributor's Corner. Please email your response to me: Pamela@ontiltradio.com or click my picture here to visit my profile. ~ Blessings, Pamela

It seems as though everyone at OTR has encountered "The Crud" one way or another… So here are my Tips to help alleviate some of your symptoms.

"The Crud #1": If you have that nasty Stomach Flu, here is my sound advice to help you through the worst days which I call The 3 P's... yes I said 3 P's are what helped me through even the nastiest of days. 1: Pepto-Bismol... 2: Popsicles... 3: Pedialyte.

The Pepto is to calm your tummy, Popsicles help sooth your throat and fever, besides something cold and flavorful & Pedialyte is to replenish all the electrolytes you lost while talking to that porcelain GOD.. AND don't forget to take something for that dreaded fever.. I am a firm believer in 800mg Ibuprofen 3x's a day… and Rest Rest Rest!

"The Crud" #2 is that Nasty Upper Respiratory, this is my advice to you. 1: Kleenex... 2:Chicken Noodle Soup... 3: Vicks Vapor Rub... 4: Clean Socks... 5: 800mb Ibuprofen (Make sure you can take this medication)

Kleenex we all know you need for those really snotty days. Yuck...Chicken Noodle Soup is said to reduce the upper respiratory symptoms.. Many years ago, my children's pediatrician told me that to treat colds & upper respiratory crud, chicken soup is a better choice than over-the-counter cough and cold medicines. As it turns out, a handful of scientific studies show that chicken soup really could have medicinal value. However, at the very least, chicken soup with vegetables contains lots of healthy nutrients, increases hydration and tastes good, too. And Last but not least is Good Old Vicks Vapor Rub.. now this is where the Clean Socks come in.. And don't laugh… Slather the bottoms of your feet with Vicks VaporRub and cover with a clean pair of socks… This will stop that pestering cough in it's tracks.. Even those persistent, heavy deep coughing fits at night will stop in 5 minutes and give you hours of relief and it works 100% of the time and is way cheaper than those very strong prescription cough meds your Dr. writes for you You probably think I am crazy… but this remedy really does work.. VicksVapor Rub dilates the blood vessels in the feet, and this triggers a reflex that quiets the cough. Besides the menthol in the Vicks Vapor-Rub smells good and also opens up your nose passages to help you breathe better.

Sorry to hear about Lou. As a survivor of the same type of cancer (mine was caught early) I know some of what he went through. My prayers and thoughts go out to him, his family and friends. RIP Lou.
